Oakland County Executive L. Brooks PattersonWith the dramatic fluctuations in gas prices and the other economic challenges we face, Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, together with the Board of Commissioners, have initiated a series of activities aimed at reducing gas and energy costs for employees.

4/40 Work Weekfour-day/40-hour work week was the first initiative launched to address the rising costs. By allowing County employees to work four, 10-hour work days, employees are able to reduce their commuting costs by 20% and ease the financial burden felt every time they fill up their vehicles. The second is a new program called Oakland RideShare, matching the County's 4,000+ employees together with potential carpooling partners that live in the same area.

The savings are documented in this web site, together with an array of resources and information about how you, your business/organization, or your family can implement and benefit from similar programs and activities. Employees and citizens alike will find County-wide resources that provide practical information about improving fuel efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and ultimately saving money.

Oakland saves. Do you save?

Tell us how your organization is implementing cost-savings programs and get listed on our site.

THINK ABOUT IT. If 100,000 of the 504,000 workers in the County took advantage of a 4/40 work-week program, they would save 10 million gallons of gasoline in just one year, while leaving more than $27 million cash in their pockets to be available for their food costs and other living expenses.

(*Calculation based on $2.6 per gallon gas price with an average two-gallon savings per person, per week.)
